Defining My Identity The idea of â€Å"Nature vs. Nurture† is a heavily debated topic of psychology, is a person prone to certain behaviors based on their DNA or based on the environment they are raised in (Montag). As a child who struggles with sensitivity, perfectionism, and anxiety, this is a question I am very curious about. What do I need to know about the environment and people around me as I shape and define my identity? I have been influenced by the socioeconomic, political, and spiritual values of my family. My father was born into a wealthy family that sent him to boarding school at the age of eight. He had been brought up thinking that he did not have too much money, but when he found out his background, he was disgusted, and decided to reject that part of him by moving away and indulging himself in only the simplest things (Barnett). My mother was born to a journalist and a hard working man from the Great Depression (Herbert). They were well off. Today we live in a simple house and own mostly second hand things. We never talk about money. I think that because of my parents values, even the idea of talking to anyone outside my immediate family(even aunts, uncles, or grandparents) about money raises some feelings of anxiety and discomfort. In terms of political views in my family, I feel my mother’s side definitely has greater influence than my father’s.
